Benzylpenicillin sodium



Benzylpenicillin is an antibiotic which has demonstrated efficacy in infections due to susceptible strains of; Staphylococcus, Neisseria meningitidis, Pneumococcus, clostridium tetani, Actinomyces, Streptococcus, Corynebacterium diphtheria, Gasgangrene, Spirochaete
The drug may be given by intramuscular injection or by intravenous infusion

Indications

The drug is indicated for the treatment of severe furuncle and carbuncle, anthrax, septicaemia, meningitis, pneumonia, gasgangrene, gonoblennorhea, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, syphilis and vincct’s angina

Administration

The drug may be given by intramuscular injection or by intravenous infusion. Dissolve the drug with sterile water for injection or physiological saline before administration.
Precaution
The individual patient may show rash, dermatitis, even the allergic shock probably, so before using the drug the intradermic test with 0.1ml sterile solution containing penicillin sodium and physiological saline of concentration 500u/ml should be taken via intradermic injection. The positive patient is contra-indicant

Dosage
·        Intramuscular injection: 0.24 – 0.48 (400,000 – 800,000i.u) b.i.d – q.i.d
·        Intravenous infusion: 0.96 – 2.4g (1,600,000 – 4,000,000i.u) per day

Treatment for meningitis or endocarditis
The daily dosage may be increased to 6 – 12g (10,000,000 – 20,000,000i.u), dilute the drug before infusion.
